So I was reading the Wikipedia entry on Wu Tang Clan and then ended up on Busta Rhymes Wikipedia page and it mentioned a live performance on Arsenio Hall where Busta stole the show pretty much. This was the year I graduated from high school. So I went to youtube and typed in “busta arsenio” and I got this. Busta did steal the show – check it for yourself:

Wow. Some music videos rarely match up so well with the song. I had never heard of this band before but the video came across my newsreader. Such a great combination of bleak and beautiful – in both the song and video. The band is called Bon Iver and sounds something like a faux lo-fi cross between Low and Elliot Smith. The former in the way it is minimalistic, sparse, earthy and beautiful, and the latter in the lush vocals and soaring lyrical lines.

Is it lame that watching this video gave me a lump in my throat? Something about chainsaws, cold weather, bonfires, and just being present in the moment seemed to resonate with me:

My earliest memories as a child are chainsaws, winter, grey, and the feeling of absolute presence in the middle of a silent dark forest. I remember being in high school and watching Twin Peaks and how David Lynch (who grew up in Washington State) captured the essence of the eerie spirits which seem to lurk about in the trees.

I have seen very little since then that captured such a feeling. Until now.

I predict this will be one of those most listened to, critically acclaimed albums of 2008.

I am not a big Rascal Flatts fan except for a few songs, but this one had some pretty cool lyrics:

Bat For Lashes – What’s A Girl To Do

One of my favorite bands since about March is Bat For Lashes.

I had to post this video because it is just too cool. A lone girl on a bike at night trailed by crazy masked BMX stunt men doing choreographed freestyle tricks in unison. Check it:

My favorite song is actually called “Trophy”. I was unable to find a recorded version online, but I did find this live performance at Maxwell’s in New Jersey:

I’m sure she’s probably a trip to live with … she seems a little trippy … perhaps moreso than Cat Power even…

… as evidenced by this 12 minute video about the band.

Yeah, she’s weird. But what cool beautiful music.

RollingStone’s RockDaily has a great comprehensive post about yesterday’s press conference complete with video.

Initially I was thinking I might not be interested in seeing this, but after watching the press conference I must admit I got a bit excited.

“We are at our best.” Said Roth, “This is not like the Police. The idea is that this will go on and on and on. This is like a brotherhood like it never was before.”

One of the things I always admired (despite all the drama) was the way they could jump back and forth across the lines between popular music and heavy metal. The following two videos are good examples – the first is the radio staple “Dance The Night Away”. The second one is the headbanging “Unchained”.
